acitretin Acitretin is a form of vitamin A which is used to treat severe unresponsive psoriasis. It can also be used for other purposes. Women should avoid pregnancy during therapy, because of possible birth defects.
 
actinic keratosis Precancerous lesion caused by solar radiation, which occurs mainly in sun exposed areas of the body (face, hands, scalp).

AIDS An acronym for the acquired immuno deficiency syndrome. AIDS per definition is the third stage of an infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Complications include an increased occurrence of malignant disease (such as skin cancer and lymphomas).
 
albinism An inherited disorder where the skin almost completely lacks melanin. It affects the skin, eyes and hair. The incidence of albinism is about 1:20,000.
 
amelanotic melanoma A melanoma lacking a distinctive dark, brown-blackish coloration. It may show a reddish or pale color.
 
anaplasia The characteristics of a cell which make it classifiable as a cancer cell (orientation, form, differentiation).
 
anesthetic Anesthetic is a substance which is used in surgical procedures to numb the treated area.

autoimmune disease A condition in which the body tissues are attacked by its own immune system.
