basal cell Small cells found at the bottom of the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin.
 
basement membrane Ground substance composed of fibrous elements, proteins and space-filling molecules. It is characteristically found under the epidermal cells and separates them from the dermal layer.
 
basophilic (adj.), can be coloured with basic dyes
 
benign of mild character
 
biopsy Removal of a tissue or cells from a living body.
 
Bowen's Disease Red scaly plaque-like skin tumor which is potentially malignant but is not yet able to metastasize. The atypical tumor cells are still confined to the epidermis. If they transgress the basal membrane, the tumor has developed into a malignant Bowen carcinoma.
