genetic code Consecutive sequences of three nucleic acid bases (triplets) in DNA or RNA that determine the sequence of amino acids in protein. A triplet acts as a codeword for one amino acid. The genetic code is nearly universal for all organisms, with minor variations in some species.
 
granuloma Localized nodular inflammatory lesion characterized by a large number of cells of different types. It is caused by a variety of chemical, biological or physical irritants.
