malignant Resistant to treatment, severe, or tending to become progressively worse. When referring to a tumor, this term implies a tendency to invade adjacent tissues and to spread to other areas or organs of the body.
 
melanin A dark biological pigment found in the skin which is produced in the melanocytes.
 
melanocyte Skin cell that is able to produce melanin and can be found in the basal layer of the epidermis.
 
melanoma Cancer of the melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment in the skin.
 
metastasis A secondary disease center in an organism which is the result of certain factors spreading from a local (primary) disease process to another location in the body.
 
mitosis Cell segmentation during which chromosomes are split longitudinally and duplicated.
 
morbidity The incidence or frequency of a disease among a population.
 
morphological Adj. relating to morphology which is the science of the structure and shape of a creature and its organs.
 
mortality Death-rate; ratio of the amount of deaths in proportion to the average population.
 
mucosa The layer that covers the inside of a hollow organ and which is kept damp through gland secretion.
